Some 1.2 million tonnes of rock salt leave the mine at Pugwash Harbour, Nova Scotia, each year, loaded onto bulk carriers at a company-owned wharf facility. Opened in 1959 by the Canadian Salt Company and now operated by Windsor Salt, the mine runs beneath the Pugwash River near the village on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and employs around 210 people. Shipments run mainly from spring through late autumn while the harbour is ice-free, with bulk carriers calling several times a year to load salt. Rail service from nearby Oxford Junction supplements the port, moving salt overland to distribution points across eastern Canada. The harbour itself has no container or general-cargo infrastructure and is dedicated entirely to bulk salt handling. Shippers needing other cargo types typically use the port of Halifax instead, which offers a much broader range of services. Export customs clearance for salt shipments runs through the Canada Border Services Agency.
