Few ports illustrate Argentina's agricultural export power as clearly as Puerto General San Martín, part of the Gran Rosario complex on the Paraná River. Operated in part by majors such as Bunge and ADM, its terminals ship mainly soybeans, soymeal and soyoil along with grains; the wider complex handles around half of the country's soybean exports. It is the last deepwater, Panamax-capable port on the Paraná, equipped with silos, conveyor systems and modern loading gear. Container and conventional general-cargo traffic is marginal here, the emphasis being on agricultural dry bulk and vegetable-oil tankers. Cargo arrives from the Pampa growing regions mostly by truck, supplemented by rail. For containers, Buenos Aires is the obvious alternative, while neighbouring terminals at San Lorenzo and Rosario add further bulk capacity.
