As the principal maritime gateway for Chile's foreign trade, San Antonio handles more than half of the country's container traffic from its position on the central Pacific coast, roughly 100 km west of Santiago. In 2024 it became the first Chilean port to exceed two million TEU, moving 2,060,244 units, up 14% year on year. Two operators share the boxes: San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) with about 59% and the DP World terminal with some 41%. STI offers three berths totalling 930 m of quay and accepts vessels up to 14 m draft. Copper, fresh fruit in reefer containers and wine dominate exports, while consumer goods, vehicles and machinery lead imports. Road and rail link the port directly to metropolitan Santiago and the central interior, supporting reefer-heavy supply chains. The approved Outer Port project (about US$4.45 billion) will add a roughly four-kilometre breakwater and two semi-automated terminals to lift capacity toward six million TEU. Neighbouring Valparaíso, plus San Vicente and Coronel further south, serve as practical alternatives.
