Around 550,000 TEU, some 1,100 vessel calls and roughly 5 million tonnes of cargo pass through Puerto Quetzal each year, making it Guatemala's leading Pacific port. Two operators share the container business: APM Terminals, whose terminal offers a 350 m quay, 14.5 m draft and three Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes, and YILPORT Quetzal with around five mobile harbour cranes. Sugar, coffee and textiles lead the export side, while inbound containers supply the Guatemalan domestic market. Hinterland transport runs almost entirely by road toward Guatemala City, about 100 km to the north, as rail links are minimal. Customs clearance is handled through Guatemala's tax and customs authority (SAT), and reefer plugs support temperature-controlled agricultural exports. For Pacific-coast container traffic this is the most capable gateway in the country; on the Caribbean side, Puerto Barrios and Santo Tomás de Castilla are the alternatives. A dedicated cruise pontoon adds 30 to 40 passenger-ship calls annually. Its position near the Panama Canal further strengthens its role on north-south trades.
