Roughly nine piers strung along the Caroní near its confluence with the Orinoco give Puerto Ordaz its industrial backbone, anchored by CVG Ferrominera Orinoco's iron-ore, pellet and briquette exports. The surrounding city of Ciudad Guayana hosts much of Venezuela's heavy industry — steel (Sidor/Ternium), aluminium (Venalum, Alcasa, Bauxilum) and carbon products (Carbonorca) — feeding raw and finished goods across the quays. Containerised shipments are better served by Puerto Cabello or La Guaira, while Guanta and Puerto la Cruz offer further Caribbean-coast options.
