Two finger piers offer four berths capable of handling tankers of around 115,000 dwt and 277 m length at roughly 11.3 m draught, with about 380 vessels calling each year. Oil is loaded through 12-inch chiksan arms at rates up to 5,500 tonnes per hour at a facility completed in 1961. The terminal does not serve breakbulk, reefer or container cargo; shippers needing those should look to nearby Maracaibo. Its hinterland is the oil fields and tank farms of the Maracaibo basin, fed by pipeline rather than rail or barge. For general import and export traffic, Maracaibo or Puerto Cabello are the realistic alternatives.
