Costa Rica's largest-ever infrastructure project began in 2011, when APM Terminals won a 33-year concession to build and run the Moín Container Terminal (TCM); first-phase operations started in 2019. The terminal occupies an artificial island of about 80 hectares roughly 500 m off the Caribbean coast, with 650 m of quay, two berths at 14.5 m depth, a 1,500 m breakwater, an 18 m channel and six super-post-Panamax gantry cranes. Annual capacity is around 1.2m TEU, making Limón/Moín Costa Rica's primary Atlantic gateway. The inaugural call, the 3,947-TEU Polar Mexico, sailed from Panama and loaded Del Monte and Fyffes bananas and pineapples for northern Europe. Reefer exports of fruit remain the commercial core, alongside dry containers, conventional cargo and cruise traffic. Extensive refrigerated capacity supports the perishable trades that dominate Costa Rican exports. Road and rail links connect the port to the Central Valley around San José. For forwarders, Limón/Moín is the country's main box and reefer port; Caldera on the Pacific and Panamanian hubs handle alternatives and transhipment.
