Around 27 kilometres east of the giant Jose crude terminal, Puerto La Cruz anchors the petroleum trade of northeastern Venezuela. Through the Guaraguao terminal and the adjacent PDVSA refinery, the port ships crude oil and refined products drawn from the inland oilfields. The Guaraguao terminal offers six berths and accommodates tankers of up to around 120,000 DWT; the adjacent refinery is rated at about 200,000 barrels per day but has lately run well below capacity. Laid out as an open roadstead with deep anchorage of more than 20 metres, it caters to tankers rather than boxes. Its cargo profile is firmly liquid bulk — container and conventional break-bulk business is essentially absent. Pipelines from the producing areas around Anaco feed the loading installations. For containers or general cargo into Venezuela, Puerto Cabello and La Guaira are the established alternatives.
