Sugar, molasses and coffee make up most of what moves through Guantánamo, a port serving the agricultural region of eastern Cuba. While the bay's outer harbour holds the US naval base, commercial cargo is handled at the modest quays of Boquerón and Caimanera in the inner harbour. Depths are shallow — Boquerón takes vessels up to around 185 metres and 5.8 metres draught — so larger ships and container services are not accommodated here. Rail and road link the berths to the city of Guantánamo, about 34 kilometres to the north. In early 2025 the Cuban government announced plans to strengthen port activity in eastern Cuba, including expanding coastal cabotage through Boquerón. For containerised or general break-bulk shipments, Santiago de Cuba and the container port of Mariel are the practical alternatives.
