More than 90 percent of Peru's foreign trade crosses a single port: Callao, on the Pacific coast beside Lima. In 2024 its two terminals handled the bulk of the country's record 3.5 million TEU, with DP World's South Pier moving about 1.96 million TEU — up 22 percent year on year — and APM Terminals' North Pier roughly 1.1 million. DP World's USD 400 million Bicentennial Pier lifted that terminal's capacity by around 80 percent, letting Callao serve large container vessels and become the first box terminal on South America's west coast to clear two million containers in a single year. Beyond containers, the quays handle dry bulk, minerals from Peru's mining sector, reefer cargo such as grapes, avocados and blueberries, and breakbulk. Hinterland connections rely mainly on trucking along the Pan-American Highway; the Andes limit rail, and there is no through container railway. Customs clearance under the national authority SUNAT is heavily concentrated here. For northern and southern Peru, Paita and Matarani are the practical alternative ports, complemented by the new deep-water hub at Chancay north of Lima.
