DP World arrived in Callao (PECLL) in 2006; in 2025 its South Terminal became the first on South America's west coast to move more than 2 million TEU in a single year, handling roughly 60 percent of Peru's containerised cargo. The port beside Lima carries over 90 percent of Peruvian foreign trade, with DP World's South Pier and APM Terminals' North Pier together offering more than 2,000 metres of quay and about 3 million TEU a year. The USD 400 million Bicentennial Pier, inaugurated in 2024, lifted South Terminal capacity to 2.7 million TEU and allows Callao to work large container vessels; DP World's cumulative investment since 2006 is around USD 1 billion. A further expansion of more than USD 1.3 billion is proposed, which would raise annual capacity to as much as 4.3 million TEU alongside a 20.8-hectare off-dock staging area. Beyond containers, the quays handle dry bulk, minerals from Peru's mining sector, reefer cargo such as grapes, avocados and blueberries, and breakbulk. Hinterland connections rely mainly on trucking along the Pan-American Highway; the Andes limit rail and there is no through container railway. Customs clearance under the national authority SUNAT is heavily concentrated here. About 78 kilometres to the north, the deep-water port of Chancay, opened in November 2024, is gradually reshaping Asia-Pacific routings in the region. For northern and southern Peru, Paita and Matarani remain the practical alternative ports.
