At the mouth of the Río Haina, some 16 km west of Santo Domingo, lies the Dominican Republic's busiest port. Run by Haina International Terminals (HIT), it spreads across two terminals on opposite banks of the river — Haina Occidental and Haina Oriental — and handles containers, dry and liquid bulk, roll-on/roll-off and breakbulk. Two rail-mounted gantry cranes and modern yard equipment support annual throughput above 400,000 TEU. Together with Santo Domingo, Haina accounts for roughly 85% of the country's imports, having superseded the older Santo Domingo and Boca Chica facilities as the central gateway. A draft of around 9.4 m suits feeder and mid-sized ships on Caribbean routes. Customs clearance runs through the Dominican DGA, while road links serve the capital-region hinterland. For larger box ships, the deepwater transshipment hub of Caucedo (DP World), south-east of Santo Domingo, is the alternative. Forwarders value Haina above all for mixed import and project cargo bound for greater Santo Domingo.
