Gypsum is the whole story at Garrucha: almost all of this Andalusian port's tonnage comes from the Sorbas quarries, the largest gypsum deposit in Europe, with smaller volumes of crushed marble, limestone, pozzolana and gravel. In 2021 the Almería-province port moved about 7.6 million tonnes — more than Almería and Carboneras handle combined. It is a dedicated mineral-bulk exporter, not a container, reefer or general-cargo facility. The mineral arrives by road over the roughly 30 km from Sorbas, with close to 1,000 truck trips on a busy day, and ships out mainly to destinations in Africa and the United States. Inland logistics therefore revolve almost entirely around quarry haulage rather than rail or waterway. For boxed or customs-cleared cargo, Almería, Cartagena or Valencia are the appropriate options.
