Cement, clinker and gypsum, not containers, pass over the quays of Puerto de Carboneras on the coast of Almería in south-east Spain. Built in 1985 to land coal for the Litoral thermal power station, the port changed character once the plant closed and Endesa handed its concession back to the Almería Port Authority in 2025. The defining facility today is Holcim's terminal to the south, serving the nearby cement works with raw materials and alternative fuels. Building-materials firms such as Cosentino, Knauf and Saint-Gobain also use the port for imports and exports. Deep approaches — a fairway over 20 m and a cargo pier of around 14 m — suit bulk and dry-bulk traffic rather than container lines. For boxed or general cargo, Almería, Cartagena and Motril are the alternatives. Carboneras thus remains a specialised industrial port for building materials and bulk.
