Steel, chemicals and iron ore tie Bilbao (ES BIO) tightly to the industrial economy of the Basque Country and northern Spain, on the Bay of Biscay. The port handled around 32.8 million tonnes in 2024, with container traffic of roughly half a million TEU against terminal capacity above 900,000 TEU. As an EU customs port, Bilbao clears imports and exports under Union rules and connects by rail and road to the dry ports of Azuqueca de Henares, Coslada and Villafría (Burgos). For pure deep-sea container flows to Asia, shippers often favour Valencia or Algeciras, while Santander is a nearby regional alternative.
