SSA Marine's Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) moved 2.9 million TEU in 2025, up about 5 percent, making Colón (PAONX) the busiest cargo complex at the Atlantic mouth of the Panama Canal. Close to 88 percent of those boxes are pure line-to-line transshipment rather than Panamanian imports. Next door, Colón Container Terminal (CCT) is now wholly owned by Taiwanese carrier Evergreen following a roughly US$268 million buyout. MIT works eight berths — two of them roll-on/roll-off — with more than 2,000 metres of quay, post-Panamax cranes and over 2,400 reefer plugs; an expansion adding a berth and four ZPMC super-post-Panamax cranes is aimed at lifting capacity toward 4 million TEU. The adjoining Colón Free Zone, one of the world's largest free-trade areas, allows storage, repacking, re-export and distribution without Panamanian import duties, which fall due only when goods enter the national customs territory. Alongside containers the port handles vehicles on RoRo services and break-bulk, while road and the trans-isthmian railway link it to Balboa on the Pacific side roughly 80 km away. Panama's ports together handled 9.9 million TEU in 2025, up 3.6 percent, and Landbridge Group's Panama Colón Container Port (PCCP) is developing a further terminal on Isla Margarita. Alternatives on the Atlantic side include neighbouring Cristobal (PACTB, run on an interim basis by MSC's TiL since 2026) or, depending on the trade, Caucedo in the Dominican Republic.
