More than 6.3 million tonnes across 638 vessel calls in 2024 make Puerto Caldera (CRPTC) Costa Rica's principal Pacific port, and in September 2027 it changes hands to a consortium of APM Terminals and Hanseatic Global Terminals (HGT), a Hapag-Lloyd subsidiary. Until then Sociedad Portuaria de Caldera (SPC) and grains operator SPGC continue to run the site; port authority Incop extended their concession in June 2026 to 31 August 2027. Cargo spans containers, iron, timber, cereals, fertilizers, vehicles and heavy machinery, with roughly 50,000 imported vehicles landed in 2024 and container volume up about 11 percent. Two contiguous terminals offer some 730 to 800 metres of quay at depths up to about 13 metres, and a container capacity near 300,000 TEU that regularly runs above 90 percent — a level at which waiting times build. The modernisation project is meant to lift capacity toward 11 million tonnes and about 700,000 TEU a year according to Incop; an appeal by rival bidder ICTSI was rejected by the Comptroller General in 2026. Inland distribution to the San José region, roughly 100 km away, is entirely by road with no through rail freight, and Costa Rica's membership of CAFTA-DR plus its association agreement with the EU makes preferential origin documentation a routine part of clearance. On the Caribbean side the deep-water Moín terminal (APM Terminals) near Limón is the standard alternative for container traffic, while Balboa in Panama serves Pacific transshipment.
