About a fifth of Ecuador's banana exports leave the country through Puerto Bolívar (ECPBO), the terminal at Machala in El Oro province and the nation's leading banana and reefer port. Bananas dominate the cargo mix, complemented by pineapple, mango, cocoa, passion fruit and broccoli; in 2025 roughly 86 percent of shipments moved in reefer containers and about 14 percent as bulk on refrigerated vessels. Turkish operator YILPORT (YILPORTECU) has run the terminal since 2017 under a 50-year concession backed by a roughly USD 750 million investment programme, adding cold storage and new berths including a 240-metre quay for temperature-controlled fruit. The plantation hinterland around Machala connects by road. For mainline container services and larger volumes, Guayaquil (Contecon) and the deep-water Posorja terminal (DP World) are the alternatives.
