Ecuador's fruit exports have a second door beside Guayaquil: Puerto Bolívar (ECPBO) at Machala handles roughly a fifth of the country's banana exports and is its leading reefer port. Five berths totalling 910 metres of quay serve a container terminal designed for 600,000 TEU; in 2025 about 86 percent of shipments moved in reefer containers and some 14 percent as bulk on refrigerated vessels. Bananas dominate the cargo mix, alongside pineapple, mango, cocoa, passion fruit and broccoli. Turkish operator YILPORT (YILPORTECU) has held a 50-year concession since 2017 behind a roughly USD 750 million investment programme, with USD 150 million committed by the US development finance institution DFC. An automated cold store of about 17,000 square metres with more than 15,000 pallet positions, costing some USD 30 million, is due to open late in 2026, while the expansion plan adds dredging to 16.5 metres of draft, a new 450-metre quay and further handling equipment. With the terminal running at roughly 30 percent of installed capacity, YILPORT is courting shrimp, coffee and mineral cargo as well as direct services to Asia. The plantation hinterland around Machala connects by road; for mainline container services and larger volumes, Guayaquil (Contecon) and the deep-water Posorja terminal (DP World) are the alternatives.
