Coal mined at Cerrejón in La Guajira leaves Colombia almost entirely through one outlet: Puerto Bolívar, the company's private bulk terminal on Bahía Portete. A roughly 150 km mine railway delivers the coal in about four hours, feeding covered conveyors and a direct ship-loading system in service since 1985. A pier added in 2014 with a twin shiploader, together with deep berths of around 17 m, lets the terminal work large Capesize bulkers. Operations are confined to coal — there is no container, breakbulk or dangerous-goods handling here. As a private mine facility, it offers no public customs clearance for third-party cargo. Exporters needing boxes or mixed freight route instead through Santa Marta, Barranquilla or Cartagena.
