Phosphate rock and gypsum, not containers, define the cargo profile of Puerto Bayovar on the desert coast of Peru's Piura region. The loading facility serves Vale's Miski Mayo mine in Sechura, with a roughly 187-metre platform built to ship bulk phosphate concentrate – about 3.7 million tonnes moved in 2013. Alongside it, PetroPerú runs the Bayóvar oil terminal, the end point of the Nor Peruano pipeline carrying Amazon-basin crude that is loaded into VLCCs. As an open roadstead, the site is built for dry bulk and liquid cargo; it is not a customs gateway for liner or containerised freight. Hinterland access runs by road to Sechura and Piura, with no rail link. Shippers needing container or general-cargo handling in northern Peru should route via Paita, or Callao for larger volumes.
