Bananas — and the reefer containers that carry them — define cargo at Puerto Armuelles on Panama's Pacific coast. Built in the 1930s by the United Fruit Company and long the headquarters of the Chiriquí Land Company, the port sits on Charco Azul bay in western Panama near the Costa Rican border, with a single pier offering a berth of about 136 m and roughly 11 m depth. After production fell following the 2003 sale, Chiquita resumed exports and now ships around 50 containers of bananas a week, making refrigerated cargo the dominant segment. A few kilometres to the south, the separate Petroterminal de Panamá (Charco Azul) handles crude-oil transshipment for VLCCs feeding the trans-isthmus pipeline. The port is not set up for mainline container services, for which Balboa near Panama City is the nearest capable alternative. Forwarders mainly use Puerto Armuelles for banana and reefer exports out of the Chiriquí region.
