Progreso handles roughly 150,000 TEU a year through Yucatán's only container terminal, operated by APM Terminals on the north coast of the peninsula. Because the Gulf of Mexico shoreline here is very shallow, vessels berth at the seaward end of a causeway and pier about 6.5 kilometres long – among the longest in the world – where oil, dry-bulk, general-cargo and container berths sit alongside a cruise terminal. For the Mérida region the port is the principal maritime gateway for imports and exports, from consumer goods to temperature-controlled farm produce served by on-site reefer storage. Customs and foreign-trade clearance are established at the port. Volumes nonetheless remain modest next to Mexico's main Gulf container ports: higher container counts and most project and RoRo cargo move through Altamira and Veracruz. For shippers in south-east Mexico, Progreso offers the short, direct link to the Yucatán Peninsula, with larger flows consolidated via those alternatives.
