Canada's second-largest box terminal does not sit in Vancouver: it sits some 770 kilometres northwest, at Prince Rupert (CA PRR), where DP World's Fairview Container Terminal holds 1.6 million TEU of annual capacity. Fairview handled about 885,800 TEU in 2025, up 20 percent, while total port throughput reached 26.3 million tonnes, a 14 percent gain. MSC, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd and COSCO call regularly, and CMA CGM has secured slots on the trade. Two berths, an 800-metre quay and 17 metres of depth are matched by dockside CN Rail, which carries boxes to central Canada and the US Midwest with almost no trucking. As North America's closest port to Asia, it shortens the crossing from Shanghai by several sailing days. Ridley Island adds terminals for coal, grain and liquefied petroleum gas. Under construction there is CANXPORT, the roughly CAD 750 million Ridley Island Export Logistics Project: Ray-Mont Logistics is building a 108-acre transload facility for 400,000 TEU a year of agricultural, forestry and plastic resin exports, served by unit trains of up to 10,000 feet, with operations due to start in the third quarter of 2026. Imports clear through the Canada Border Services Agency. Prince Rupert suits Asian imports moving inland by rail; Vancouver, or Tacoma and Seattle on the US side, are the practical alternatives.
