Pozos Colorados is best understood not as a general seaport but as one of Colombia's most important fuel-import gateways, handling around 82% of the country's imported refined products. Lying about 10 km southwest of Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast, it works as an open roadstead where tankers discharge naphtha, diesel and gasoline through an offshore single-point mooring (monobuoy). Submarine pipelines carry the products to shore tanks and onward inland by pipeline. The terminal is operated by Cenit, a subsidiary of state oil company Ecopetrol, and a roughly US$26 million upgrade now lets it receive tankers of up to 550,000 barrels and 80,000 tons. It handles no containers, breakbulk or roll-on/roll-off cargo, so for those flows the neighbouring port of Santa Marta is the appropriate option. For forwarders, Pozos Colorados is relevant solely within the tanker and energy segment.
