Neste's Porvoo refinery gave rise to the harbour at Sköldvik, and it still defines what moves across the quays today. Handling around 22 million tonnes a year, it ranks as Finland's largest port by cargo volume despite its official "very small" size label. Almost all traffic is crude oil, refined petroleum products and petrochemicals, served by deep-water liquid-bulk berths rather than container cranes. The surrounding Kilpilahti complex is the Nordic region's biggest oil and petrochemical cluster, home to roughly 40 companies including Neste and Borealis. Forwarders with boxed or general cargo for southern Finland should route via HaminaKotka or Helsinki instead. Tanker operators, by contrast, benefit from pipeline links, rail connections and customs handling geared to energy products and dangerous goods.
