Commissioned in 2007, the Virginia International Gateway (VIG) at Portsmouth is the largest privately owned container terminal in the United States and the centrepiece of the city's port activity. Sitting on the western bank of the Elizabeth River, Portsmouth forms one half of the Port of Virginia in Hampton Roads alongside the Norfolk terminals. VIG is a semi-automated facility that handles super-post-Panamax vessels at a roughly 15 m (50-foot) channel, pairing ship-to-shore cranes with automated stacking blocks. For forwarders this means dependable container, reefer and project-cargo handling with customs clearance through U.S. CBP. Shippers focused on coal or dry bulk are better served by the dedicated facilities at Norfolk and Newport News. Overall, Portsmouth ranks among the most capable container ports on the U.S. East Coast.
