Road meets sea at Portoferraio: trucks and trailers that cannot reach the island of Elba by land cross instead on the ro-ro ferries from Piombino. Up to 29 daily sailings, operated by Toremar, Moby Lines, Blu Navy and seasonally Corsica Ferries, run the one-hour route with capacity for several hundred passengers and around 300 vehicles each. For forwarders this means accompanied ro-ro traffic rather than container or bulk handling, which the port does not offer. Portoferraio's quays serve island supply, tourism and a yacht refit trade more than conventional freight. Deliveries to Elba are planned around the Piombino ferry timetable. Larger cargo volumes on the mainland are handled at Piombino and Livorno.
