Zinc, lead and alumina set the rhythm of Portovesme, an industrial port on the south-west coast of Sardinia rather than a general-cargo gateway. Glencore's Portovesme S.r.l. runs a major lead and zinc smelting and refining operation here, using two dedicated berths to bring in concentrates and ship out refined metal, with throughput in the region of four million tonnes. Inland links run by road and regional rail across the Sulcis-Iglesiente district.
