Wheat, fruit, cashew nuts, carnauba wax, textiles and petroleum products make up the cargo mix of Porto de Mucuripe, the port of Fortaleza in Ceará state, and Brazil's leading wheat port at around 1.2 million tonnes a year. Three large flour mills — Dias Branco, J. Macêdo and Grande Moinho Cearense — process the imported grain directly at the quayside, underpinning the port's dominant position for the commodity. Containers and general cargo move across multipurpose berths served by mobile harbour cranes, with around 500 reefer plugs and cold-storage rooms for customs inspection. In the first half of 2026 throughput reached 2.59 million tonnes, up 10 per cent year-on-year, against a full-year target of 5.08 million tonnes set by port authority Docas do Ceará; the state of Ceará is also investing BRL 50 million in infrastructure modernisation. Hinterland access is by road across Ceará; there is little freight rail. For deep-water industrial and larger container volumes, the nearby Pecém port is the alternative.
