Two container terminals – north and south, with quays of 360 and 540 metres operated by YILPORT – anchor cargo operations at Leixões, the largest port in northern Portugal. Set at Matosinhos just north of the Douro estuary, it channels roughly a quarter of the country's seaborne foreign trade and serves the industrial belt around Porto, handling textiles, footwear, wine, machinery and foodstuffs. Inland distribution runs on the A28 and A4 motorways and a rail link reaching Spain and the wider European network. Customs and import clearance are fully developed for deep-sea trade. Shippers serving the centre and south can alternatively use Aveiro and Lisbon, while Sines handles the large east-west transhipment services.
