Grain, woodchips, logs, livestock and aluminium ingots — not containers — make up the working cargo of Portland, one of Victoria's four major commercial ports. Exports flow from the GrainCorp grain terminal, whose ship-loading capacity is being boosted by a new mobile shiploader from 2026, alongside hardwood and softwood chip stockpiles, timber yards and the nearby Alcoa smelter. From July 2026, a new long-term agreement with AGL Energy enables the Portland Aluminium Partnership to operate at up to 95 per cent of its 358,000-tonne nameplate capacity. Imports centre on alumina, petroleum coke, fertiliser, sulphuric acid and liquid pitch feeding that smelter. The port moves roughly 3 million tonnes across about 200 vessel calls a year. Hinterland reach covers western Victoria and South Australia via road and the broad-gauge rail line. Box shipments should be routed through Melbourne, with Geelong the nearest alternative for agricultural bulk. Multipurpose berths also handle project and heavy-lift consignments.
