Port Talbot's tidal harbour in South Wales is one of the few UK ports able to take Capesize bulkers of up to about 170,000 dwt and 16 m draught — the deepest berths in the Severn estuary. The deepwater basin was built in 1966–1970 as Britain's first dry-bulk terminal for ships above 100,000 dwt, primarily to import iron ore and coking coal for the adjoining Tata Steel works. With the blast furnaces closing in 2024 and the last iron ore discharged, that role has largely ended; Tata is switching to an electric arc furnace that uses scrap rather than ore. Run by Associated British Ports (ABP), the harbour still handles processed slag, sand, cement, steel and heavy-lift and project cargo. The nearby M4 motorway and rail links carry freight into the South Wales and wider British hinterland, with Swansea about 14 km to the west. This is a dedicated bulk and industrial port, not a container facility; box traffic uses ports such as Bristol, Liverpool or Southampton.
