The Sudan Sea Ports Corporation administers Port Sudan (SD PZU), which handles almost all of Sudan's seaborne trade — the country has no second deep-water port of comparable weight on the Red Sea. It is split into a South Port holding the container terminal (around six berths, roughly 400,000 TEU of yard capacity), berths for grain and general cargo, a northern bulk area, the Al Khair terminal, and the separate Bashayer terminal for crude-oil exports. Inland distribution relies on road and the rail corridor toward Khartoum, a network considered fragile, with clearance administered by the Sudanese customs authority. For contingency or transhipment, Jeddah across the Red Sea and Djibouti remain the practical alternatives.
