After roughly two decades dormant, Port St Joe in Florida is back on the international shipping map: a foreign-flag vessel loaded wood chips for Puerto Cortés in Honduras. This deepwater port on St Joseph Bay, on the Gulf of Mexico, has a bulkhead of about 580 m at the turning basin plus extensive adjacent land, currently used for wood biomass, oyster shells and rock as well as shipbuilding (Eastern Shipbuilding). The federally authorised channel still needs dredging for larger tonnage — a first phase has been applied for — and there is no regular container or liner service as yet. Road and rail tie the port into the Florida Panhandle hinterland. For established container and breakbulk freight in the region, Panama City and Pensacola are the right choice, with Tampa for higher volumes.
