Three berths totalling 530 metres of quay, mobile harbour cranes and 19 hectares of reclaimed hardstand make up Motukea International Terminal, where Port Moresby's international container traffic now runs. Operated by ICTSI since 2018, it is the only facility in the Port Moresby area able to handle international boxes, RoRo and breakbulk for vessels drawing up to 12.5 metres. As the gateway for Papua New Guinea's capital region, it feeds consumer, construction and project imports. Hinterland reach is limited, however, as few roads link the capital to the highlands, leaving domestic distribution dependent on coastal shipping and air freight. For industrial exports and larger volumes, Lae and its South Pacific International Container Terminal form PNG's second and more cargo-heavy gateway. Customs clearance is handled by Papua New Guinea authorities at the terminal.
