A navigation channel some 1,200 m long, a 175 m quay and a compact 2.5-hectare yard define Port Mathurin, the only port on the Mauritian island of Rodrigues, about 600 km north-east of the main island. Contrary to a common error, it is not the principal harbour of Mauritius — that is Port Louis — but a supply port run by the Mauritius Ports Authority and served by feeder and supply vessels from Port Louis. The yard offers container slots with three reach stackers and reefer points, plus a 600-tonne shed for rice, sugar and flour. It mainly handles consumer goods, building materials and foodstuffs for the island, and fuel bunkering is available. For deep-sea and mainstream container traffic, Port Louis on the main island remains the relevant gateway.
