With roughly 389,000 TEU handled in a recent year – about 123,000 of them transshipment – Port Louis is the sole commercial seaport of Mauritius and the gateway for almost all of the island's foreign trade. The Mauritius Container Terminal (MCT), run by the Cargo Handling Corporation, offers around 800 m of quay across 34 hectares and a rated capacity of about one million TEU. Five post-Panamax and three super-post-Panamax cranes, backed by 16 RTGs, work the box ships, while a channel dredged to 16.5 m makes this the deepest port in the southern Indian Ocean. Across its 16 berths the port also handles sugar, grain, cement, petroleum products and fishery cargo, Mauritius being a notable tuna-processing centre. The container terminal doubles as a regional transshipment point for Indian Ocean trades. As the island has no railway, all inland distribution runs by road. Shippers seeking complementary transshipment can also consider Port Réunion or the larger hubs at Colombo and Durban.
