Famous as a duty-free holiday island rather than a freight harbour, Langkawi's main quay at Kuah works passengers and cruise calls far more than cargo. Fast ferries link Kuah with Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah on the Malaysian mainland and with Satun in Thailand, while the cruise terminal can berth several ships at once. Goods traffic is largely limited to supplies for the island itself; there is no meaningful container, breakbulk or dangerous-goods handling, and no rail-based hinterland on the island. Shippers with genuine ocean freight for northern Malaysia rely on Penang. Larger container volumes are routed through Port Klang, the country's principal box gateway.
