Two car carriers up to 270 m long on a 510 m berth, the state's largest grain export terminal and New South Wales' second-biggest coal export operation set the scale of Port Kembla, on the Tasman Sea south of Wollongong. The port handles 100 per cent of the state's motor vehicle imports and is the principal grain export point for southern and south-western NSW. It also carries the bulk of BlueScope's seaborne steel trade, including all the steelworks' sea-borne raw materials. The most recent development is Squadron Energy's Port Kembla Energy Terminal, Australia's first LNG import terminal using a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU); start-up has slipped and is not expected before 2027. Cargo is therefore dominated by coal, grain, steel products and vehicles, with break-bulk and general cargo alongside. Scheduled container shipping is effectively absent. Hinterland links run by road and rail to Sydney and the state's south. For containers, Port Botany in Sydney is the relevant gateway, while Newcastle covers additional coal volumes.
