Built in the 1950s to load Tasmanian apples for export to Europe, the deep-water wharf at Port Huon (UN/LOCODE AU PHU) on the Huon River near Geeveston, about 50 km south of Hobart, once anchored an industry that peaked in 1964 at 8.9 million export crates before collapsing through the 1980s. Today the port, part of the TasPorts-administered Hobart port area, handles general cargo, timber and paper products, and bulk fishmeal imports supplying the region's salmon farming industry, notably serving vessels of aquaculture operator Huon Aquaculture. The wharf can accommodate vessels up to about 190 m in length overall with a draught of 9.0 m. Named international shipping lines calling at Port Huon are not publicly confirmed; for container traffic, the Port of Hobart (Macquarie Wharf) and Burnie on the north coast remain Tasmania's principal hubs.
