Handling roughly 3.46 million tonnes a year across two terminals, Port Harcourt is the Nigerian Ports Authority's Area 1 complex on the Bonny River in the eastern Niger Delta. Its quays take liquid, dry and bulk cargo and include a dedicated container terminal with cranes, though Nigeria's main container flows pass through Lagos rather than here. General cargo, dry bulk and petroleum products dominate the throughput. Inland distribution is mostly by road across the Niger Delta, with the historic Eastern rail line playing only a minor freight role. In 2025 the Nigerian Ports Authority pushed modernisation of the eastern ports, with procurement under way for Port Harcourt, Onne, Warri and Calabar and dredging that cut average vessel turnaround to about five days. Customs clearance is handled on site by the Nigeria Customs Service. For oil-and-gas traffic and larger container volumes, shippers turn to nearby Onne, and to Apapa and Tin Can Island in Lagos for mainline container services.
