Built for Jamaica's bauxite-alumina industry, Port Esquivel is a dedicated bulk terminal handling around 2.5 million tonnes of cargo a year. It lies about 35 km west of Kingston and is the only port on the island's south coast able to take large vessels, reached through a channel some 23 km long. Exports centre on alumina and molasses, while fuel oil and process inputs such as caustic soda are imported for the refinery chain. The concrete-and-steel pier runs about 645 feet, two ships can berth at once, and a rail link ties the quay to the alumina works at Ewarton. This is not a container or general-cargo port; for boxed freight, nearby Kingston and its transhipment terminal are the right choice. For alumina, bauxite or other dry and liquid bulk in Jamaica, however, Port Esquivel offers purpose-built capacity.
