Operated by Wilson Sons, the Tecon Salvador container terminal is the principal box gateway for north-eastern Brazil. Set on the Baía de Todos os Santos in Bahia, it offers an 800 m quay able to berth two New Panamax vessels at once, served by three Super Post-Panamax and three Panamax ship-to-shore cranes plus 16 RTGs at depths of 12 to 16 m, for an annual capacity of around 500,000 TEU. The World Bank's Container Port Performance Index 2023 ranked it the sixth-best terminal in its under-500,000-TEU class. Cargo is mainly containerised, with deep-sea liner links to Europe, West Africa and North America and reefer volumes tied to Bahia's fruit and agricultural exports. As part of recent upgrades, Wilson Sons added twelve electric terminal tractors for internal haulage. Hinterland movement runs almost entirely by road into the state's industrial and farming interior, as dedicated rail access to the box terminal is limited. For bulk and petrochemical cargo around Salvador, the nearby port of Aratu-Candeias is the reference, while Suape near Recife adds further container capacity in the north-east.
