Port Dalrymple (AU PTD) is in fact the historic name for the mouth of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania rather than an active terminal: commercial cargo is worked downstream at Bell Bay, about 40 km from Launceston. Operated by TasPorts, the Bell Bay deep-water port is the only Tasmanian port with international container throughput, handling containers, bulk and general cargo at an annual capacity of around 89,000 TEU. It is the export point for aluminium from the adjacent Rio Tinto-operated smelter, as well as forestry products — up to 2 million tonnes of woodchips a year — minerals and local manufacturing output. In November 2024 TasPorts announced an upgrade of the woodchip ship loader to take larger vessels, due for completion in 2028. Road links connect the port to Launceston and the wider north of the state. For Bass Strait Ro-Ro and ferry traffic, Devonport is the nearest option, while Hobart and Burnie cover additional general and container cargo.
