On Morocco's Mediterranean Rif coast, Al Hoceima functions mainly as a fishing and passenger port rather than a container-freight gateway. Its best-known service is the seasonal ferry to Almería in Spain, a crossing of about six hours, while the basin itself is filled with fishing boats and fronted by a busy fish market. The Gare Maritime, expanded for passengers from 2003, handles travellers, and the port's commercial cargo role is explicitly limited. Shippers moving containers, breakbulk or project cargo into northern Morocco therefore rely on nearby Nador–Beni Ensar or the large Tanger Med terminal further west.
