Port Credit's days as a working harbour are firmly in the past. Lumber, grain and dredged shale once shipped from the mouth of the Credit River in Mississauga, and a Canada Steamship Lines terminal opened in 1963, but growing lake freighters outpaced the basin and commercial operations ended in 1972. Now Canada's largest freshwater marina, it carries no cargo function; on Lake Ontario, the Port of Hamilton and the Port of Toronto handle commercial traffic.
