By the 1880s, roughly half of all grain ships clearing the Golden Gate loaded at Port Costa, whose Carquinez Strait wharves sent California wheat to Europe via Cape Horn. Cargo moving through San Francisco Bay now uses Oakland for containers and the ports of Stockton and Benicia for bulk and project loads.
