Run by the Autorité Portuaire Nationale (APN), the main port of Port-au-Prince (HTPAP) remains Haiti's principal container gateway at roughly 177,000 TEU a year, even as gang violence has repeatedly forced it to suspend operations. In normal times it handles 80 to 90 percent of the capital's box traffic across seven berths — two of them Ro-Ro — with about 1,250 m of quay at depths of 8 to 10 m, the container terminal operated by Caribbean Port Services. A separate Terminal Varreux handles petroleum products, while dedicated quays serve grain and cement, backed by a 40-hectare yard and four mobile harbour cranes. Because Haiti imports most of its food, the disruption carries acute humanitarian stakes, and shippers must confirm availability before booking. The private Port Lafito south of the city and Cap-Haïtien in the calmer north are the main alternatives.
