Salt, scrap metal, tallow and frozen beef make up the export side of Port Alma, with petroleum products coming in the other way and ammonium nitrate and explosives handled as classified dangerous goods. Serving as the sea port of Rockhampton some 62 km inland, the terminal is run by Gladstone Ports Corporation. The natural deep-water harbour on the southern edge of the Fitzroy delta takes vessels up to 180 m and offers three berths – two general berths and one dolphin berth for petroleum imports. There is no container line service; the trade is bulk, breakbulk and dangerous goods. Road haulage runs through Rockhampton, from where cargo spreads into the Central Queensland hinterland. Shippers needing containers or major liner calls use nearby Gladstone instead, while Port Alma offers the shorter link for regional bulk and DG consignments.
