Flinders Port Holdings, a privately owned ports and terminal group, runs Port Adelaide (AU PAE), the principal container port for the Australian state of South Australia and in fact its only container terminal. Spread across Inner and Outer Harbor with more than 20 wharves, the port concentrates box traffic at the Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal (FACT) on Berths 6 and 7 in the Outer Harbor, about 23 km from the city centre, where the operator has worked ships since 2012. Three post-Panamax cranes and 22 straddle carriers serve a 660 m container quay, handling vessels of up to 300 m length on a draft of around 14 m, for roughly 400,000 TEU a year. Construction has started on the AUD 50 million Outer Harbor Intermodal Precinct, whose first warehouse is designed to process 8,100 TEU annually and stack a further 1,000 TEU. Beyond containers, the port moves grain via the Viterra-operated Berth 8 for Panamax bulkers, along with minerals, petroleum products, vehicles on Ro-Ro carriers and cruise calls. Road links and a connection to the national rail network tie the quays to Adelaide and the wider South Australian interior. The Port River channel carries depth suited to Panamax tonnage. For routings that skip Adelaide, Melbourne to the east and Fremantle to the west are the nearest major container ports.
