Three quays make up the Herøya terminal at Porsgrunn: a 175 m deepwater quay dredged to about 9.7 m, a 230 m crane quay and the 150 m Tinfos quay, all built to feed the surrounding Herøya Industrial Park rather than scheduled container lines. The port handles fertiliser raw materials for Yara Norway, manganese alloys for Eramet, plus dry and liquid bulk, general cargo, timber, project and heavy-lift consignments. Yara runs the deepwater quay itself as the intake point for its Porsgrunn plant. Road access uses the E18, with regional rail sidings serving the industrial estate, while the autonomous electric vessel Yara Birkeland shuttles fertiliser between the plant and the export port at Brevik. Shippers needing regular container slots generally route through nearby Brevik or Oslo instead. For bulk, chemicals or oversized industrial cargo in the Telemark region, however, Porsgrunn is a purpose-built works port with direct factory links.
